Best Bar in Gori – Old Marani

I do not like to throw around plaudits like Best Bar in Gori without good reason, but with Old Marani I feel I have found not just the best bar in Gori, but one of my new favourites in the world!

So, why does Old Marani get the moniker of best bar in Gori? Well, the reasons are myriad! We can start with the drinks, which are not just varied, but have a beer challenge. Then there is the clientele, which is local and international, and then there is the fact I had one of the greatest nights ever here. Oh, and I got to see England win.

What is Old Marani?

According to the owner, who has a background in bars, the place has only been open a few months and he is trying to create a bar that is welcome to all. Well, on the night we were there that was clearly working, as there was truly an international crowd in the bar.

The bar itself is located in a residential area, which means you have to be quiet when you are outside. This might be an issue going forward, but we got away with it when we were there. The pub part upstairs is spacious, but they also have a great cellar.

Apparently, Marani means old wine cellar in Georgian, and this was where we went to watch England vs Norway. As far as I am aware they do not usually open this, but we requested football and they very much acquiesced to our request. The owner was super cool and I really think this place will cement itself into folklore around the bars of Gori.

The drinks at Old Marani and the beer challenge

OK, so you come here for beer, which is cheap at just 6 Lari, or a few dollars a pint. Of course, there is a range, as well as wines, liquor shots and the like. Food here is limited, particularly late, but after we had been screwed over by the awful KE&RA they did us some snacks.

Then there is the Old Marani beer challenge. Basically, to drink 1.5 litres in under 90 seconds. When I entered the bar one guy had done it in a minute, many had failed. I waited 10 seconds then did it in a further 20. Even at 30 seconds I am now the record holder here by far. Not all heroes wear capes.

The Best Bar in Gori?

Saying the best bar anywhere is a big call, but I stand by Old Marani being the best bar in Gori for a few points. Firstly, there is not much nightlife in Gori, so these guys have really tried to do something different. This is not Villa Park or trying to be a big club, it is trying to be a Georgian pub that welcomes everyone.

And you know what? It works! The place had about a 50-50 mix of locals and foreigners and Old Marani just has a great atmosphere. I will be back to Georgia and I will be back to Old Marani.
