Pyongyang Nightlife – Golden Lane Bowling Alley in 2026

Golden Lane

While the nightlife of Pyongyang formally at least was a little bit spartan, there are a few jewels in the rough that have kept people entertained over the years. One of these is the fairly infamous Golden Lane Bowling Alley.

Originally opened in 1994 (during the Arduous March) it has retained its spot as a way to not just spend an evening, but also as one of the late openers in the capital. Bowling is a bit of a thing in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea too, so it is also a great place to see and interact with the locals.

What the Golden Lane Bowling Alley?

Golden Lane Bowling Alley is one of Pyongyang’s longest running modern leisure facilities and was opened in 1994 during what became known as the Arduous March period in DPRK history. Despite the economic hardships of the time, the venue was part of wider attempts to maintain recreational and cultural life within the capital.

The alley is state owned, much like virtually all (but not all) entertainment facilities within North Korea, and over the years has become popular with locals, visiting delegations and tourists alike. While newer and flashier nightlife spots now exist within Pyongyang, Golden Lane has retained something of a cult reputation due to both its longevity and late opening hours.

And fun piece of trivia for you, or maybe two bits of trivia! James Dresnok, the famous soldier who defected to North Korea over the DMZ can be seen at Golden Lane in the film “Crossing The Line” (). Oh and I once met his son in Pyongyang.

Facilities at Golden Lane

The main attraction is obviously the bowling, with multiple lanes that are generally pretty well maintained by DPRK standards. Alongside this there are also arcade style basketball hoops, small amusement machines and seating areas where people gather between games. There is also a snack and drinks area serving beer, soft drinks and basic food.

Historically there were also machines that were kind of gambling adjacent. Much like Pachinko you could win tokens and exchange them for prizes. As of this year though and my last visit these are now gone. Not successful? Banned for being bourgeois? I honestly don’t know.

The overall vibe is actually pretty lively, particularly at weekends when local groups come in large numbers. It is not exactly Vegas, but by Pyongyang standards it is one of the more energetic nightlife venues.

Prices at Golden Lane Bowling in Pyongyang

Prices for snacks and the like are pretty standard Pyongyang prices. The bowling itself whilst relatively cheap by western standards would be considered a middle-class exploit in North Korea. Yes, they have a middle-class in North Korea.

Games tend to cost around $3-5 per person depending on group size and what exactly is being booked, while beers and snacks are generally fairly affordable by Pyongyang standards. Shoe rental is either included or available for a very small extra fee.

And you know what? While overall there are other places I prefer when it comes to the nightlife of North Korea, not least The Diplo! You can’t go wrong with Golden Lane Bowling Alley, particularly if you are spending a decent amount of time in North Korea.
